Family values ProAct
In the past few months two sisters, Cathie Boos and Margie McGuire, have stepped forward to give contributions to ProAct out of appreciation for what the organization has done for their sister, Barbie Faschingbauer, who began ProAct’s work program nine months ago.
“I am very pro ProAct,” explained Boos, after she and her sister took a tour of the facility and met with several staff in January. “You could have blown me away. What a facility!”
Boos and sister Margie McGuire have been so relieved to know that their sister is in an appropriate and supportive work situation and has the opportunity to take classes. She recalled, “You have something for everyone and they all work in harmony.” Noting the value of work and everyone having something to do, she encouraged ProAct to “keep doing what you are doing. You are boosting the morale of so many.”
She describes how they watched their sister struggle for 22 years in an unsupportive, harsh work setting where she took the bus to work and lived in an unsafe Minneapolis neighborhood. McGuire added, “I wish we would have known about ProAct sooner. . . In her previous job, so many made fun of Barbie and we did not realize it.”
After Faschingbauer lost that job, McGuire, an Inver Grove Heights resident, took action to find a new home and Barbie moved to a safe residential setting in Farmington. McGuire then discovered the work opportunities at ProAct by talking to a relative of a neighbor and reading a feature story about ProAct in the paper. Even ProAct’s transportation was a big comfort to the family. But, she added, “It was mostly important that Barbie was able to get a job rather than sit home and lose her self confidence. ProAct’s interaction with people. . . it is just a good thing.”
Help Support ProAct...
In this period of economic uncertainty and restrained support from governmental agencies, the contributions of those who believe in ProAct's mission become even more important. ProAct's revenues come from payments by agencies that refer clients, clients themselves, grant funds and revenues produced from providing goods and services to private businesses. Beyond that, ProAct is entirely dependent on the understanding and financial support of the funding community and individual donors. While always seeking to operate cost effectively and in a businesslike manner, ProAct continues to need the help that you can provide. Please consider some of the following ways that you can help ProAct accomplish its mission and assist even more people with disabilities.
