MOTIVATION, INDEPENDENCE AT CULVER'S

Working up a sweat to get the Culver's restaurant in Red Wing ready for the lunchtime rush, James Williams from ProAct is focused on his first job in the community, and the matchup is proving ideal for employer and employee, alike.

His cleanup and dining room prep tasks are something he's taking great pride in.  "I'm going a lot faster," said Williams, who works a morning shift, seven days a week.  The pay is good.

"It's amazing how he keeps himself busy and working hard," said ProAct job coach Del Cook.  While working, Williams coaches himself on what needs to be done so he can stay on task.  A lack of focus can mean the loss of a job, so motivation ends up being as important as job skills themselves.

Williams requires little or no supervision, said a key Culver's staff member.  "He's always on time, always here and you don't have to walk behind him and follow him around," said Manager Chris Brummeyer.  "He's a dedicated employee."

Some of Williams' commitment can likely be traced to the friendly work environment at the quick serve restaurant.  Other businesses have tried to lure Culver's employees away for higher wages, but most have stayed, said Cook.  Williams said he enjoys his new sense of independence and his coworkers.  He often receives compliments for his work from fellow employees.

In the spirit of serving customers both inside and outside of the organization, the restaurant has impressed ProAct staff members with its commitment to Williams.  "I like treating people the way I like to be treated," said Chris Brummeyer.
