Open house, food, music and dance on October 23

Former Scott County run program in Shakopee has impacted hundreds of people and their families with life skills training, community integration and work offerings

The year was 1968 when a new program sprung up in Scott County to serve a population of people with disabilities. New Options is celebrating 50 years of service with food, fanfare, music and a dance at its location from 5 to 8 p.m. on October 23.

“We have been so pleased to be a part of the communities in Scott County, and to serve hundreds of individuals with disabilities and their families through the years,” said New Options- ProAct Program Manager Ali Brown. Formerly run by Scott County, New Options ProAct is now operated by Eagan-based ProAct, Inc., a nonprofit that provides similar services in four additional communities.

A short presentation is planned, with remarks from Scott County Health and Human Service Director Pam Selvig, ProAct CEO Steven Ditschler and Program Manager Ali Brown. Sandwiches, wraps and pastas as well as punch, coffee water and desserts will be served. Music is provided by DJ Greg Sletton.

There is no charge for the event, but the program asks that people make reservations. Current and past participant families, supporters, county staff and officials have been invited.

The nonprofit will show photo history displays from New Options’ past. It was once located in Lydia, Minn. near Prior Lake and in a different structure in Shakopee.

The event takes place at 792 Canterbury Road South #132, inside the workforce center building. Please RSVP with Jamie Mohlin by calling 952-403-7962 or by email at jmohlin@proactinc.org.

New Options- ProAct currently serves 87 individuals with disabilities with a range of services. Some work in the community as part of crews or enclaves and others work in-center.

The Renaissance Festival, area churches and other employers utilize crews from New Options- ProAct. It also enjoys a steady volunteer and donor base of supporters who assist with and contribute to community engagement efforts.

Headquartered in Eagan, ProAct provides person-centered services that enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.  Most of the people served are from the Twin Cities area, southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
