We are thrilled to shine our ProAct Talent Spotlight on Andrea, a remarkably determined, multi talented individual whose energy, drive, and warm heart inspire everyone around her!
With two decades as a participant to ProAct’s programs like employment and independent living, Andrea has built an extraordinary life filled with meaningful employment, expanding personal independence, and a decorated 30 year career as a Special Olympics athlete.
A Champion’s Journey: 30 Years of Special Olympics
Andrea’s passion for sports began when she was just eight years old. Over the past 30 years, she has participated in a wide spectrum of athletics like softball, track and field, floor hockey, bowling, basketball, and even taking on the frosty Polar Plunge!
One of her absolute favorite sports is Bocce Ball. Competing in Bocce for three decades, Andrea recently marked her ninth time competing and placing, bringing home two third place medals and one fourth place finish! For Andrea, sports aren’t just about winning, they are built on camaraderie and respect. She emphasizes that in Bocce, athletes always shake hands, win or lose. That sense of good sportsmanship is a value she carries into every aspect of her life.
Andrea’s talents also shine off the court as a Global Messenger for the Special Olympics. A confident public speaker, she steps up in front of large crowds to share her story and inspire others. With guidance from her brother to keep her focus on the audience rather than looking down, and support from her sister-in-law who works for the Special Olympics, Andrea has grown into a powerful voice of hope. When meeting families with children who have Down syndrome, Andrea’s strength shows them just what is possible.
Thriving at the Eagan YMCA
Andrea brings that same dedicated champion mindset to her professional life. For the past 6 years, she has worked in janitorial services at the Eagan YMCA, keeping the facility clean, welcoming, and tidy. Her hard work and presence even earned her a feature in the YMCA newsletter!
Andrea isn’t just an employee at the YMCA; she’s an active community member and fitness enthusiast. To stay energized and healthy, she trains 4 to 5 times a week by combining swimming twice a week, personal training twice a week, and Yoga classes twice a week.
Through ProAct’s Employment Support Services (ESS), Andrea works closely with her supporters like Linda, who visits twice a month. Linda acts as a supportive mediator between Andrea and her manager, making sure everything runs smoothly on shift, addressing any workplace needs, and helping her continue to build skills.
Fostering Independence with Individualized Home Support (IHS)
In addition to her workplace success, ProAct’s Individualized Home Support (IHS) services empower Andrea to live a fulfilling, independent lifestyle.
Working with her IHS staff member, Cindy, whom Andrea loves spending time with, Andrea navigates everyday practical routines with confidence. Cindy helps her practice math skills like telling time, assists with price comparison shopping at local stores, and accompanies her to medical appointments. At home, Andrea takes pride in maintaining a neat and tidy space, doing her own laundry, and cooking delicious meals with her dad.
This personalized home support gives Andrea the space to grow as a self advocate while giving her parents peace of mind and flexibility.
Overcoming Challenges with Spirit
Andrea’s journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Having navigated a hip replacement that briefly required a wheelchair, as well as managing Type 2 diabetes with strong encouragement and guidance from her father, Andrea’s resilience is unmatched. Today, she is more active and energized than ever!
Whether she is training for her next Special Olympics event, keeping the YMCA spotless, or learning new everyday skills, Andrea approaches life with heart, strength, and a joyful spirit.
Reflecting on the support she receives from her team, Andrea shares:
“I definitely would recommend ProAct. They know how to talk to people with disabilities and their families and handle them so well… I’m so glad that God brought me here.”
We are endlessly proud of Andrea’s achievements, her unwavering sportsmanship, and the bright light she brings to ProAct, the YMCA, and the broader community!
