We are thrilled to shine our Talent Spotlight on Millie, a dedicated member of the ProAct family who recently made history by becoming the first participant hired directly into a brand-new role at ProAct!

Millie’s journey is a powerful testament to the impact of vocational training and the incredible growth that happens when determination meets opportunity.

A Journey of Growth and Discovery

Millie began her journey with ProAct in February, participating in the production floor work program to build her professional skills. On the production floor, Millie would learn skills she said could easily be taken to a variety of jobs and workfloors. Before joining ProAct, Millie’s work experience was primarily in retail. She found that working a regular job without specialized support could be difficult, but at ProAct, Millie found a team that truly understood her needs.

During her time in the program, Millie was introduced to the production floor—an environment she had never experienced before. As she trained on various tasks, she discovered a hidden talent and excelled at tactile, hands-on work. Whether packaging with nuts and bolts or working with vinyl products, Millie has quickly developed her new talent. Her supervisors, including Assistant Production Manager Doug Strom, noted that Millie consistently showed initiative and a constant desire to improve.

Making History: The “Best Birthday Present Ever”

Millie’s hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed. In July, she received a life-changing phone call on her birthday from Jen Cavalier, ProAct’s Production Manager: she was being hired as ProAct’s very first Production Assistant.

“Best birthday present ever,” Millie shared, reflecting on the moment she officially joined the staff.

This transition brought new challenges that Millie has embraced with enthusiasm. She moved from working 3-hour shifts twice a week to a full 8-hour schedule three days a week. While the days can be tiring, Millie thrives under the increased responsibility and the trust her supervisors have placed in her.

Finding a Calling and a Community

For Millie, this job is about more than just a paycheck; it’s about belonging. After a few rough years of unemployment, Millie feels she has finally “found my place.” She loves seeing the direct impact of her work on the production floor while getting the opportunity to help other participants in the program achieve their goals. Millie credits much of her success to the faith and support provided by her team like Jen and Doug.

Millie’s family has seen a remarkable transformation in her, noting her growth in confidence and her new sense of community.

Success Beyond the Workplace

Millie’s success at work is mirrored by her success at home. She previously received Individualized Home Supports (IHS) services through ProAct, which helped her gain the skills needed to live more effectively and independently. She highly recommended these services to others looking to strengthen their independence.

Millie’s Advice

Millie encourages other participants to treat the work program like a career from day one.

“The more you put into it and the more seriously you take it, the more you get out of it,” she said.

Millie views the program as a vital stepping stone to greater things and hopes to eventually grow into a supervisory role to support the people who helped her so much.
